01Haus der Seefahrt

A masterpiece of Hanseatic architecture

The Haus der Seefahrt is an important cultural monument in Hamburg and a typical example of Kontorhaus architecture. It is located in one of the most traditional places in the Hanseatic city: in the heart of the old town on Nikolaifleet and the historic Deichstrasse, where Hamburg’s rise to a harbour metropolis began in 1188. The careful revitalisation by Quest Investment Partners will not only preserve this monument to Hanseatic building culture for future generations, but also develop it further with modern infrastructure and sustainable standards for contemporary office use.

The seven-storey building offers around 3,300 m² of rental space with flexible floor plans and ceiling heights of over three metres. Bright, prestigious working areas are created by the three-sided lighting. The exposed location at Hohe Brücke 1 guarantees outstanding visibility and sweeping views of the Elbe, the Elbphilharmonie concert hall and the Speicherstadt historical warehouse district. There are numerous restaurants, cafés and boutiques in the immediate vicinity. Baumwall underground station is a five-minute walk away, the main railway station ten minutes and the airport around 30 minutes.

Built between 1909 and 1910 according to plans by architects Edgar Foßhag and Georg Schlepps, the Haus der Seefahrt combines Art Nouveau elements with functional Kontorhaus architecture. An ornate sandstone façade with fabulous-looking sea creatures characterises the building, while a filigree ornamental lattice with Art Nouveau motifs adorns the entrance area. The statue of Hammonia, Hamburg’s patron saint, is enthroned in the south-east corner. Every detail of this cultural monument bears witness to its deep roots in the city’s history – a history that is now being continued.
